Student Senior Project: Walk for African Rural Schools Foundation

I’d like to congratulate Courtney Matessa on putting together a 2K walk, held on March 18th 2012, to raise funds for the African Rural Schools Foundation (ARSF). I was Courtney’s advisor for her senior project, and she designed and hosted this walk at North Boundary Park near Pittsburgh. I also helped Courtney research colleges, explore options of majors, and ultimately to find a program for interior design. She was accepted at Kent State, University of North Carolina Greensboro, Valdosta, Edinboro, LaRoche, Bowling Green, the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Courtney is a senior at Seneca Valley School District and is an honors student. She and plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in the Fall of 2012.

The African Rural Schools Foundation funds education in Uganda, and the proceeds will be used to make improvements to the current schools. They badly need improvements in sanitation, plumbing, buildings, and purchases of basic necessities like beds. A “wish list” of the school’s needs is here. Courtney met with Reverend Renee Waun, who is the Founding Sponsor of ARSF, to coordinate her efforts. As part of her senior project, I referred Courtney to Reverend Waun, whom I know professionally and through sponsoring a child through ARSF.
